John Peter Orban Obituary

John Peter Orban 62, of Hastings-on Hudson died March 19, 2013. He lived in stories: in telling them, in listening to them, in writing them, in sharing the proudest moments and the toughest struggles of everyone from his closest family to the fare that he picked up to take to Kennedy. He cut school in 1st grade to watch the squirrels at the park, he blew up a bulldozer when he tried to figure out what a firework down the exhaust pipe would do, he hid in closets when he knew he was about to get in trouble, he called the night before Thanksgiving to see if Mac and Cheese could be added to the menu, and he stood with his family through births and deaths, tragedies and triumphs, from the Land of the Midnight Sun to Hastings-on-Hudson. John Peter Orban was a teacher, a friend, a confidante, an author, a cab driver, a weaver, a devoted son, a caring brother, a long lost dreamer, a man of great faith, and the best uncle that anyone could have. For many years, John Peter drove a cab, and he took every fare and every trip to the train station or the airport as an opportunity to share a part of someone's life, even if it was only five minutes or an hour. He was guided by his faith and loved everyone he met. He was kind and generous to a fault. He lived very simply but shared whatever he had and even more with those who he thought needed it more than he did. He would and did give away the shirt off his own back, the last dollar in his bank account, and even the roof over his own head to those in need. He never had much to his name but had history, dignity, grace, and kindness to spare. John Peter touched the lives of everyone he met. He lived in stories, and he will still. We just have to tell them for him now. Such a loss for humanity. John Peter Orban, born on 10-5-1950, a holy year, will be laid to rest on 3-23-2013, next to his parents and sister at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mass of the Resurrection 10AM Saturday, 3-23-2013 Church of St. Matthew R.C., Hastings-on-Hudson. Visiting 2-4 and 7-9 on Friday, 3-22-2013 at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Midnight Run, 97 Main Street, Dobbs Ferry.
