Walter J. Kuskowski of Hastings-on-Hudson departed this life after a long illness on March 5, 2013. He was born on August 16, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York to Anastasia Dulski and Edward Kuskowski. His parents and brother Arthur predeceased him. He is survived by his loving wife Christine B. Lukasik Kuskowski, his son Mark J. Kuskowski Cheryl, daughter Nancy Nieves, step children Joseph Adam Lukasik Jennifer and Valerie Anne Lukasik Harden Michael, and his grandchildren Michelle and Michael Nieves, Adam Lukasik, Amber Baker and Charlette Harden. Also by his great grandchildren Michael, Briana and Alexander Nieves as well as many cousins in Poland. During three decades of teaching Social Studies at John Ericsson Junior High School in Brooklyn, he was among the first teachers of Holocaust studies in the New York City public schools. Consequently he became a consultant for the New York State curriculum guide, teaching about the Holocaust and Genocide. He consistently encouraged accurate presentation of the suffering of Jews, Polish Christians and others during the German Nazi occupation of Poland in educational materials and in the media as well. As a member of the Holocaust Studies Committee of the Kosciuszko Foundation, Walter served as a consultant at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC regarding materials, films and exhibits depicting Polish history, victims and rescuers. His volunteer work for the Kosciuszko Foundation also included activities promoting Polish American and Jewish American relations, planning and arranging tours of Poland for American educators, teaching English in Poland, and selecting scholarship recipients for graduate studies in the United States and Poland. He was Co-founder and President Emeritus of the Polish American Teachers Association. He also gave his time to preparing immigrants for US citizenship. He will be remembered for instilling family values, love of the United States and appreciation of one's heritage and for his commitment to educating youth.
