Msgr. Raymond J. Byrne Obituary

Msgr. Raymond James Byrne, 81, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church, Irvington went home to his beloved Lord on January 8, 2013. Born in the Bronx on September 13, 1931, he was one of twelve children born to the late John Patrick and Mary Josephine Plunkett Byrne. He attended Our Lady of the Assumption, Cardinal Hayes High School and Cathedral College. Called at a young age to serve in the priesthood, Fr. Ray was sent to study Spanish in 1957 at Catholic University, Ponce, Puerto Rico, and was then assigned to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish on Southern Blvd. in the Bronx. After five years, he was transferred to St. Paul's on 117th St. in Manhattan where he remained until 1990 when he was named Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington. He was elevated to the rank of Monsignor in 2006. He was predeceased by two sisters, Anne Cusack and Doris Curtain. Survivors include his sisters, Margaret Halton, Joan Gerth, Mildred McCormick and her husband, Ed, and Eleanor Byrne; brothers, John P. Byrne, Robert P. Byrne, Thomas Byrne, Rev. Edward G. Byrne and Michael Byrne and his wife, Patricia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his parish families. Visitation 3-9p.m. Thursday and 12-7:30 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church, 16 N. Broadway Irvington, NY. The Mass of the High Priest will be celebrated at 7:30p.m. Friday. Funeral Mass Saturday 10 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery Donations in memory of Msgr. Raymond Byrne may be made to Fox House, 111 East 117th Street, New York, New York.
