Edwards, Orville D. Eddie Orville D. Edwards, in his 100th year, formerly of Dobbs Ferry died April 4, 2015 on his boat in Punta Gorda, Florida where he had lived for the last 35 years. He was a graduate of Dobbs Ferry High School and St. Lawrence University where he was President of the student body. During WWII he was a Captain in the US Army and fought in Normandy, and the Rhineland and was an anti-aircraft battery commander during the defense of Antwerp, Belgium. Following his discharge in 1946 he returned to Dobbs Ferry where he and his wife Joyce lived until the mid 1980's. He was president and owner of Edwards Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry and had been active in professional associations, the Hudson River Orchestra and local civic organizations. In addition to his career as a funeral director he was a pioneer in the use of fiberglass as a boat building material. In 1953 he co-built the first fiberglass sailboat in the 40' size range which opened the boating industry to the idea of mass production of boats made of fiberglass. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 2000. He is survived by three children, Jon Edwards of Annapolis, MD, Alison Drevlow of Port Charlotte, FL, and William Edwards of Hawthorne, NY. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Karyn Dick Niles, Susan Bryan Mosher, and Laurel Mike Regensburg and six great grandsons, Chase, Garrett, Zachary, Cheyne, Navy and Heber. The family will receive friends at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4PM and 7-9PM. There will be a family tribute at 3:30PM.
