Matthew J. Matty Kavanah Obituary

Matthew J. "Matty" Kavanah, 80 of Hastings-on-Hudson passed away on September 16, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Yonkers, he was the son of the late Frank and Margaret Kavanah. Matthew was raised in Hastings-on-Hudson and graduated from Hastings High School. He worked in construction for Labor Local 235 until his retirement. Matthew served in the United States Army stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. He was involved with the Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Ambulance Corps for 20 years. Matthew was also the Captain of the Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Department Uniontown Hose Co 2. He was a member of the Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Department for 60 years. Matthew was the unofficial mayor of Hastings and was a major staple of the community. He was a kind hearted, simple, humorous, no bells and whistles gentleman. Matthew was also a member of the Southside Club in Hastings-on-Hudson. Matthew was an avid watcher of high school sports and loved playing golf in his spare time. He enjoyed going to watch the final fours basketball games with his son. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all the people he touched. Matthew is survived by his wife Dorothy, son John, step-children Dorothy, Kenneth and Harry Honovich and grandson Christopher Honovich. He is also survived by his siblings Frank and Sr. Francine "Alverna" Kavanah and by his cherished Yorkie Izzy. Matthew was predeceased by his first wife Judith Kavanah in 1993 and by his siblings Tom, George, Grant, Benjamin, Peggy Calvert and Deanna. Mass of the Resurrection Saturday 11:00am Church of St. Matthew, R.C., Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Visiting Thursday 7-9pm and Friday 2-4 and 7-9pm Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made in Matthew's name to the Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester.
