Joseph William DiDonato

Joseph William DiDonato of Dobbs Ferry passed away on August 2, 2014. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Rosario and Carmella DiDonato. Joseph moved to Dobbs Ferry in 1938 and graduated in 1949 from the Dobbs Ferry Public Schools. Joe served in the US Army in Salzburg, Austria from 1952 to 1954 attaining the rank of Corporal. He also served as a company clerk for the Heavy Weapons Company. Joseph was an original member of the Dobbs Ferry Olympic Club which merged with the Dobbs Ferry Embassy Club. Joe gave up his membership to attend Iona College. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree by attending at night for 6 years from 1954 to 1960. Joseph was a salesman for Macy's Department Store in White Plains from 1949 to 1956. Joe then held middle management positions in Operations/Distribution Logistics for Nestle Foods from 1956 to 1972 and for Thomas J. Lipton, Inc. from 1973 to 1991 until his early retirement in 1991. On June 21, 1952 Joseph married the love of his life Elizabeth Button at Sacred Heart Church in Dobbs Ferry. Joe was active in sports all his life. He played football and basketball for Dobbs Ferry High School. Joe also played basketball and softball for Macy's in the Industrial League and softball for Nestle in the Industrial League. Joe enjoyed bowling locally and in leagues at Nestle and Lipton. Two of his favorite sports were golf and ping pong, which he played anytime he could. Joseph was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed. Joseph is survived by his wife Elizabeth, daughter Janet Bob Daubenbis of Cortlandt Manor, NY, son Joseph Lori DiDonato of Dobbs Ferry, NY, grandchildren Kristen Daubenbis, Eric DiDonato, Edward DiDonato, Emma Rain DiDonato and Gianna Marie Dellamedaglia and great grandchild Giovanni. He is also survived by his sister Gertrude Bauer and was predeceased by his sister Angela Raffa. Visiting 7-9pm Monday and 2-4 and 7-9pm Tuesday Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. Mass of the Resurrection Wednesday 9:30am Our Lady of Pompeii Church, Dobbs Ferry.
