Mary Scioscia
Mary H. Scioscia died, at Cabrini Nursing Home, Tuesday evening June 5, 2018. She was 91. Mary was born November 4, 1926 in Toronto Canada. Her family moved to the United States in 1929. She married Frank A. Scioscia in 1946 and they lived on the west coast for 20 years. In 1966 the Scioscia family moved to Hastings on Hudson, where family still lives. Mary Scioscia is survived by her four children. Louisa Stephens with her husband Chris, longtime residents of Hastings, now live in Pennsylvania. John Scioscia and his wife Bhanu live in California. Charles Scioscia, with his wife Elizabeth Galletta and their children live in Hastings on Hudson. Virginia Vazirani, a devoted visitor to Cabrini, lives in Yonkers. All nine of Mary's grandchildren are, or were, students in the Hastings school system. They are: Gregory Stephens, Michael Stephens, Mary Stephens, Isabel Stephens, Brajarani Scioscia, Francesco Scioscia, Anthony Scioscia, Sebastien Scioscia and Luisa Scioscia. Gregory Stephens teaches at Hastings High School. Mary is also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Andrea and Lia Stephens went to school in Hastings. They and the others, Forrest, Holly, Bilbo, Oliver and Violet all had the great pleasure of having their great-grandmother read them stories. Books and reading stories were integral to Mary Scioscia's life. She and her husband, Frank, founded the Dobbs Ferry Bookstore in 1974 and then riverrun bookstore in 1978. They ran many lively events out of the riverrun. Mary was a valued member of the Hastings Literature Club for decades. She served as president of the Friends of the Library and remained on the Friends board for a long time. She was involved in both the Dobbs Ferry and the Hastings Historical Society Mary Scioscia's book, Bicycle Rider, beautifully illustrated by Ed Young, is still enjoyed by young people. It remains in print after many years and has been excerpted for literature textbooks. She also has published several books of Indian folk tales illustrated by a daughter in law, Saradiya Scioscia. Mary worked as an English teacher. She was especially gifted at igniting love of reading in young adults who had previously struggled, not yet realizing that reading was something to love. Mary was a quiet woman with a bountiful outpouring of goodwill. She gave joy. She felt joy. Mary was lucky in the family, friends, and community she had.
