Joann L. Lavey

Joann L. Lavey of Dobbs Ferry passed away at Phelps Memorial Hospital on May 21st 2014. She was 88 years old. Joann was born Joann Miller in Stockton C.A. and grew up in Modesto C.A. She attended California College of Arts & Crafts where she earned a B.A. degree. During World War II she was a USO hostess. While attending college she met Kenneth H. Lavey. They married in 1948 and moved to Brooklyn N.Y. She pursued a career in textile design until 1954, the year they moved to Dobbs Ferry N.Y. That same year she also gave birth to her first son Brian; who passed away in 1980. In 1958 she had her second son Neil. During the late eighties and early nineties she worked as a volunteer receptionist/secretary at Echo Hills Community Counseling Center located in Hastings on Hudson. Her husband passed away in 1996.She is survived by her son Neil and his husband Gorden Guelker- Lavey, as well as her grandson Kenneth Wade Lavey. She was known for her keen designer's eye and a sly sense of humor, as well as her passion for fuschias and orchids. Joann was also a painter and a sculptor. She will be dearly missed by all those who her knew her. A memorial for Joann L. Lavey will be on July 12th, 2pm- 5pm at the The James Harmon Community Center at 44 Main Street in Hastings on Hudson
