Murray H. Weiss

Murray H. Weiss, age 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, May 19, 2014 at home. Mr. Weiss was born on February 28, 1917, in Yonkers, New York. He was a 1935 graduate of Gorton High School in Yonkers, and attended University North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. When his father became ill, Murray took over the family business, Herman's Bar & Grill in Yonkers, until his retirement. In 1955, he married Patricia Grace Farrell of Portland, Maine. They enjoyed a life full of love, laughter, family, friends, and travel. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to many. Murray had a wide range of interests. He was a life member of Dunwoodie Masonic Lodge #863 and also a member of the Yonkers Post #68 Jewish War Veterans. He loved the New York sports teams, especially the Mets, storytelling, barbeques, fishing, and the outdoors. He was a very charitable man. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia; by his daughters Deborah Kaplan and her husband, Robert, and Diane Gruber and her husband, Tony of Thornwood, NY; by his son, Charles Weiss of Peekskill. "Poppy" is also survived by the grandchildren he adored, Stephanie, Stephen, Sarah, Jillian, and Jessica. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Sarah Weissberger Weiss, and by his sisters Rita Bleich and Frances W. Klein of Yonkers. The Weiss Family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Moshen Gam, and Hospice nurses Noeleen Moohan and Violetta Kolenska for their care, compassion, and dedication. Funeral Service 9:30am Wednesday Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, 64 Ashford Avenue, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Jackson Avenue and Saw Mill River Road, Hastings-on-Hudson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Murray's name may be made to Jansen Hospice Palliative Care, 670 White Plains Road, Suite 213, Scarsdale, NY 10583, or to the charity of your choice.
