Margaret Cornelison Bowden Obituary

Margaret Cornelison Bowden, 96, of Irvington, died Thursday May 6, 2004. She was born in Bloomfield, NJ, the daughter of Robert and Alice Loughridge Cornelison. Mrs. Bowden who was known as Peg, was the widow of Burnham Bowden who was the President of Lord & Burnham Company in Irvington. Mrs. Bowden received her master's degree in chemistry from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. After her marriage to Burnham Bowden in 1929, she settled in Irvington where she turned her attention to varied volunteer efforts and raising her children. During World War II, Peg assisted the distribution of food coupons to people from Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings and Tarrytown. She also served as a board member to Saint Faith House in Tarrytown, an organization that provided shelter to teenage mothers. The shelter closed in 1989, but the Saint Faith House still operates as a foundation, providing funding for organizations that help troubled teenagers. One of Mrs. Bowden's greatest interests was gardening. She was an active member of the Irvington Garden Club for many years. In her retirement she also enjoyed traveling with her daughter and son in law. Surviving are her daughters Mary Alice Lyman, Elizabeth B. Freimer, Molly B. Murray and her son, Burnham Bowden, Jr. , along with seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Memorial was Monday at the Irvington Presbyterian Church. Memorials to Irvington Volunteer Ambulance Corps., The Irvington Public Library or the Irvington Garden Club appreciated.
