Joseph E. Beninati Sr., 79, a longtime resident of Ardsley passed away on March 10, 2021. Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Louis and Veronica (nee Kelly) Beninati. For over 30 years he was a Graphic Arts and Printing Teacher at Mount Vernon High School. Joseph enjoyed model trains, photography, music, playing the slots and solitaire. He was also a coffee lover and avid reader. Joseph was a wonderful storyteller, wise and humble gentleman. He was an altruistic family man, who was also genuinely endearing, charming and dapper. Viewing Friday, March 12, 2021 from 11-1pm followed by service at 1pm at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, Dobbs Ferry. Enclosed is the eulogy that Rachel read during the service: Our Dad… Our dad was like an onion, as Shrek said. He was full of layers. Layer one was a man with a great sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh. Layer two was what seemed to be a grumpy old man. But the underneath it all, he was a very wise, compassionate, kind soul that was also very private about his own feelings and demons. He lived a tough life but also managed to be full of life. He cared so deeply about his family. Nothing brought him more joy than to have his house full of his kids and grandkids. Nothing made him more antsy than having any more that that! He was a man of great stories but also one liners such as; "Hurry up and wait", "play it by ear", he greeted us by saying "Happy birthday"...no matter what the occasion and everyone's favorite; "Ay, this woman". But he really loved "this woman". He and mom were together for almost 50 years. They did everything together. He would do everything and anything for her. Even though he always complained about whatever it was, you know he wouldn't have it any other way. Enclosed is the eulogy that Maya wrote and read during the service: Grandpa was the kind of guy who could make you smile. He would sit in his chair and laugh, laughing was my favorite thing about grandpa. He wasn't the kind of guy who would get up to play ball, but that doesn't mean he was a bad grandpa. Grandpa always knew how to make people happy. Grandpa‘s last words to me were he loved me, he loved his children and grandchildren. I asked my mom if it was wrong to be relieved that he was gone. her answer was it's not wrong to feel the way that I because he's not suffering anymore. I will never forget him because he was a big impact on my life. Although he is not with us anymore we have to carry on his legacy and his spirit. To grandpa!
