Anna Wortner Obituary

Anna Wortner, a resident of Hastings-on-Hudson, died on November 24 at her home. She was 82. Anna, the daughter of Stefan and Anna Barth, in Stari Futog, Yugoslavia. She was the youngest of five children. During World War II, she and her family became refugees. They eventually settled in Germany near Munich. There she was reunited with a childhood friend, Franz Wortner. They became engaged, and they emigrated to the United States in 1955. They were married in New York City that year. Franz worked as a machinist, and Anna worked as a seamstress. They settled in the Elmhurst section of Queens, New York. Franz died suddenly in late 1958. Anna lived in Elmhurst for over 30 years, raising her son, Frank, and working as a seamstress. She did alterations and custom made clothing, both privately and for a dress shop in Forest Hills. She was most proud of the wedding gowns she designed and sewed from scratch. She moved to Hastings after she retired in 1991 to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. She enjoyed living near the Hudson River, which she often said reminded her of her childhood along the Danube. She loved spending time with her grandsons, Patrick and Brendan, and took great pride in their accomplishments. She is survived by her grandsons, son Frank, her daughter-in-law Maureen Carson, and nieces and nephews in Germany. Her siblings all predeceased her. Mass of the Resurrection Monday November 29, 2010 at Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Visiting Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care.
