Phyllis Barbara Whittaker Martin Age 91, of Applewood Estates, Freehold, New Jersey, formerly of Irvington-on-Hudson, New York, died February 14, 2010. She was born in Providence Rhode Island, daughter of William Arthur and Louise Burdick Whittaker. She earned her Bachelor's degree at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois and Masters Degree in Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, New York. She also took further studies at New York University, University of Maine, and Ball State University in Indiana. She taught Public School Music for 35 years, 1941 - 1976, first in Connecticut and later in Irvington New York, where she spent most of her professional life. Phyllis retired in 1976 as the Superintendant of Music Education for Westchester County, She was a church soloist in Connecticut as well as in Irvington and Dobbs Ferry New York and with the Westchester Baroque Chorus. She directed Junior and Youth Chorus in Dobbs Ferry New York A member of DAR, she was a Regent of the Tarrytown Chapter in New York State for four years, president of the Women's Association of South Presbyterian Church for two years and was a member of that church since 1933. Phyllis married John Paul Martin in 1965 and they moved to Applewood Estates in 1991 where he died in 1996. While living in Applewood she was an associate member of First Presbyterian Church of Freehold, and a member of the Choir. She co-directed the Applewood Players and volunteered in Health Care, playing piano and leading sing - a - longs once a month. She is survived by her sister Louise Whittaker Hines and her husband States Hines of Singer Island, Florida and niece, Stacey Louise Hines Schobert and her husband of Valencia, California. Also a great nephew Jackson States Schobert, and a great niece Landon Jo Schobert and several cousins in Annapolis Maryland., Wilmington, Delaware., New Hampshire, and Providence, Rhode Island. She is predeceased by her brother Richard Donald Whittaker in 1995 and her parents William Arthur Whittaker and her mother Louise Burdick Whittaker. There will be a celebration of Phyllis's life Sunday February 28, 2010 10AM at South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, NY
