Marian Cumiskey, RSM Sr.

Sister Marian Cumiskey, age 91, a Sister of Mercy, died on Monday, October 19, 2020, at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ. Born in New York to the late Edward and Mary Cumiskey, she is survived by her nephew, Charles Dupont of Julian, California. Sister Marian's motto, "Where there is love, there is peace", inspired her ministry as an educator. She served as an elementary school teacher in several schools in New York, teacher and principal at Transfiguration School in Tarrytown and in Rouse's Point in the Diocese of Ogdensburg, NY. After earning a degree in speech pathology at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, Marian joined the faculty at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry as a speech-language pathologist and served between 1969 and 2002. Her students loved and admired her professional, soft-spoken manner and her ability to foster and encourage their success. Marian was a gifted storyteller who brought laughter at community gatherings with tales of her students and ESL classes. She will be remembered for her listening ear, words of advice, quiet presence and love of learning. Sister lived briefly at Marian Woods in Hartsdale before joining the retirement community at McAuley Hall in 2014. Graveside service for Sister Marian will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne on Friday, October 23 at 10:30am.
