Henrietta E. McGowan Obituary

Henrietta E. McGowan, a long time resident of Dobbs Ferry, passed away on March 21, 2020. She was 91 years old. She was known as Sis, Tante, and Hank to her family and friends whom she loved and cherished. With her passing, lost is an encyclopedia of knowledge and wisdom, of life lived in a bygone era, and a family history that no one else can chronicle. Mrs. McGowan was born Henrietta Edith June Nibbe to Henry and Henrietta (Blank) Nibbe on June 16, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. The family moved to Rosedale Long Island in the 1930's then to Hastings-on-Hudson in 1947. In 1960, she moved with her parents to Dobbs Ferry. After graduating from Hastings High School, Henrietta went to work for North American Reassurance Co., now Swiss Re, America. She retired from the company in 1988 after 41 years. On August 21, 1965, Henrietta married Francis T. McGowan at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Dobbs Ferry. Her husband died in 1994. Henrietta was a long time member of the Dobbs Ferry Seniors. She was also a long time member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Hastings where she taught Sunday school years ago. Henrietta volunteered at Dobbs Ferry Hospital where she was often seen working the free coffee cart in the lobby. Henrietta had a great love of family which she expressed in her actions and in the stories she shared about family life when she was growing up. She was always willing to do silly things with her nieces and nephews when they were young, and proud of their accomplishments as adults. She looked forward to news of their lives. Henrietta cherished the friends she still had from high school as well as those she made later in life. Henrietta was known for her knitting and crocheting. It would be hard to find family or friends who did not receive a blanket from her. The last few years, she made many blankets for charity. Henrietta always said she had a happy life and was truly blessed. Her family and friends know it was a life well lived. Henrietta was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Henry, and her loving sister Helen Powers. She is survived by her 12 nieces and nephews, 23 grand nieces and nephews, 2 grandsons and 1 great grandson. A private viewing for the family was held March 24, 2020. Funeral arrangements will be determined at a later date, given the current CoVid-19 situation. Details are pending.
