Rose Della Gala Obituary

Mrs. Rose Della Gala, age 99, of Yonkers, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, July 17, 2020. Rose began her life on July 4, 1921, in the Little Italy section of Manhattan, NY, daughter of the late Giuseppe and Filomena Calarco and sister to the late Mary Randazzo, Carmine Calarco, Anthony Calarco, Frances Prestipino, and Dominic Calarco. Rose was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Vincent "Jimmy" Della Gala, a WWII veteran and hero, talented electrician and businessman. After what Jimmy described as a long time, he won Rose's heart shortly before the war, and their love grew even stronger through written letters and short visits home from the U.S. Army training camps. Rose securely kept every letter Jimmy wrote to her during the war, leaving her family with an invaluable treasure to be cherished for generations. Jimmy and Rose were married, after the war ended, on June 1, 1947 and raised their family in the Bronx, NY. The two complimented each other perfectly and their strong love and adoration for each other were evident throughout their lives. Together, Rose and Jimmy made family holidays and other celebrations into the most wonderful memories - from the food to the decoration to the joking around and laughter and beyond. Rose - always the life of the party! She would do and say almost anything to get you to laugh out loud. Rose was a loving mother to Christine Ellison and her husband Arthur Ellison, Phyllis Perone and her husband Patrick Perone, and Fredrick Della Gala and his wife Jackie Della Gala; dear grandmother to Vincent Ellison, Scott Ellison, Jackie Crino, Fredrick Della Gala and Daniel Della Gala; and great grandmother to fourteen. She skipped two grades in school, worked as both a seamstress and a social worker and was a mathematical genius who could multiply numbers faster than any calculator. To all those who knew her, Rose was always there to listen and give great advice, and her sense of humor and ability to make you laugh, smile and not take life so seriously were like no other person you knew. The many family members and friends who called her every day and frequently dropped by for tea and Stella D'oro cookies were a testament to how much she was needed and loved. A very proud wife, Rose kept Jimmy's spirit alive for all the years she lived after his passing. "My husband was a hero" she would say just as proudly telling his and their stories when they were together on Earth as she did for well over a decade after his passing. At last, they are reunited for eternity. Rose will be dearly missed; her infectious laugh, all the hilarious things she said and did, all her words of wisdom, her cooking, her holiday celebrations and spreads, her warmth, her fearless and steadfast confidence in who she was, her feistiness, her entertaining passions for playing numbers and collecting antiques, the joy and pride she took - every day - in the simple things in life, and her amazing stories of her younger years that always seemed like they should be made into a great television series. All of this and more - all of who she was, all the wonder she had inside of her, all the people she helped, and all the great things she instilled in her family that helped mold the exceptional characters evident of all those she raised - will continue to live on, always and prominently, in the hearts and minds of those who were lucky enough to have had Rose Della Gala in their lives.
