Sheldon Sorokoff Dobbs Ferry, New York Obituary

Sheldon Sorokoff

Sheldon Alan Sorokoff, M.D., FACP. Formerly of Hastings-on-Hudson, Sheldon Sorokoff passed away on January 30 in his current home in Hingham, MA. Known for his brilliant mind, compassionate medical work and his quick wit, he is missed by his adoring wife of 58 years, the Reverend Nancy Grant Sorokoff, as well as his three children: son David Sorokoff and his wife Karyn Byrd of New York; daughters Carrie Beth Sorokoff and her husband Richard Segall of Norwell, MA; and Gail Margaret Sorokoff and her husband Matthew Sheahan of Mansfield, MA; his beloved grandchildren Mason and Ella Segall; and his brother Jerome Sorokoff and his wife Sheila Sorokoff of Brooklyn, NY. Born in Brooklyn on November 30, 1931, the first born of Hyman and Doris, Sheldon Sorokoff was an outstanding scholar who attended Tilden High School, Cornell University, and State University of NY Medical School Downstate. However, the joy of his life began shortly before he graduated from medical school in 1956 when he met Nancy Grant at a party and determined to make her his wife, proposing on their third date. They married in 1958 and began their family. Sheldon Sorokoff was a devoted, loving family man. He and Nancy loved to attend the ballet. Together, the family enjoyed vacations, summertime on Cape Cod, skiing, and attending football games at West Point. Sheldon served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander from 1957-1959, spending a year in Okinawa and a time serving stateside, remaining in the reserves for some time after his active duty was over. Dr. Sorokoff completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Bronx VA Hospital before working at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital. Sheldon and Nancy moved their family to Hastings-on-Hudson in 1963, where they would settle and become integral members of the community for 48 years, until 2011. During the 1960s, he served at President of the local neighborhood association and Vice President of the Kiwanis Club. He was a long-time member of Temple Beth Shalom. Later, Dr. Sorokoff served as an alternate on the Hastings-on- Hudson Zoning Board. In Yonkers, Dr. Sorokoff worked at Yonkers General Hospital and opened a private practice in the early 1960s, where he worked tirelessly and with dedication and compassion for his patients for 34 years. He served as Chief of Medicine at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers for 12 years. He was the Fire Department Surgeon for the city of Yonkers and the Police and Fire Surgeon for the village of Hastings-on-Hudson. He pursued a particular interest in diabetes, and visited Camp NYDA in the summers to care for diabetic children. Earning his boards in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Geriatrics, Dr. Sorokoff also became a fellow in both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. After retiring from private practice in 1998, he served as Vice President of Medical Affairs for St. John's Riverside Hospital until 2001. Beyond that, he continued to work at a satellite of the Joslin Clinic in Yorktown Heights, NY. In 2011, Sheldon and Nancy left NY and moved to Linden Ponds, a retirement community in Hingham, MA, near their daughters and grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 10:00 am. Shiva will be at the home of David Sorokoff and Karyn Byrd immediately afterward. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research michaeljfox.org.
