Ann Behrendt Obituary

Ann Behrendt, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 11th at Kendal on Hudson in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Ann was born in Coatesville, PA on March 20, 1928. Ann graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she met her husband, Gary, who was attending the Wharton School of Business. Ann was an English teacher in the NY City School System and later taught English as a second language in the adult education program for the Great Neck School System. An avid golfer and tennis player, she and Gary were active members of North Shore Country Club in Glen Head, Long Island for over 50 years. She had an abiding passion for music and was one of the founding members of the Great Neck Choral Society, performing and serving on the GNCC board for more than 50 years. Ann had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge; reading the NY Times daily, listening to NPR, attending lectures and then sharing relevant insight with her children, grandchildren and friends. Most importantly, Ann was always there when family or friends needed some love, encouragement or a shoulder to cry on. She is forever her family's greatest cheerleader. Ann is survived by her husband of 70 years, Gary Behrendt, and her loving children, Tom Behrendt (Lisa Kaston) of New Haven CT, Carol Meola (Peter) of Hartsdale, NY; her grandchildren, Jeff Meola (Krista), Jessica Perillo (Mike), Max Behrendt, Adam Garcia (Dejanira), Emily Garcia; and great grandchildren Colin & Grace Perillo, Aliyah & Amelia Garcia-Munoz. She was preceded in death by her brother, Alvin Shenkman, and her granddaughter Mayra Rain Chacon. Ann's children will be hosting friends and family at Carol and Peter's home on Thursday, February 14th from 4 to 8 pm. Should you wish, donations can be made in memory of Ann Behrendt to The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation http://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/
