Isaac James Irby Obituary

Isaac James Irby, Sr. was born June 9, 1939 to the union of Clinton Sam

Irby and Sennie Clark Irby. He departed this earthly life Monday, August 1,

2022.

He was educated in the Mobile County Public School System. At Central

High School, he was Captain of the football team, a member of the baseball

team, and listed in “Who’s Who” among American High School Students.

Irby received a B.S. Degree in Industrial Arts from Alabama A&M College.

At A&M he played football, was the captain of the football team, was

selected to SIAC ALL Conference Team, and voted most valuable player.

After graduation, Irby was employed with The Mobile County Public School

System. While at Blount High, he taught science and industrial arts, coached

track and was an assistant football coach. At Satsuma High School he was a

Certified Coordinator of the State Of Alabama. His many achievements are

District 5 State Track Meet Coordinator, State Career Technical Educator

teacher, VICA of The Year, Board Member, Alabama Skills U.S.A., Vica

Associator. Irby was inducted into the 2004 Alabama A&M University

Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted into Blount High School Legacy Hall

of Fame in 2009. He retired from the Mobile County Public School System in

2001.

Irby was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is a 1961 initiate

of the Gamma Phi Chapter and he has served as the Strategus, of the Mobile

Alumni Chapter where he received many awards & honors.

Isaac was a faithful member of First Baptist Missionary Church of Baltimore


Street, where he held the position as Sunday School Superintendent for thirty-

six years. He was a Trustee, Treasurer and Executive Board President of the


First Baptist Church of Baltimore Street Day Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton Sam Irby and Sennie Clark

Irby; grandchild, Ariel Monét Irby; two sisters: Edna Richardson and Rose

Spraglin.


Isaac leaves to cherish his memories, a very loving and devoted wife of fifty-

eight years, Hilda Berry Irby; one son, Isaac Irby, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer


Foster Irby; a daughter, Norwita (Preston) Powell; grandchildren: Isaac Irby,

III Tre, Angel M. Irby; three loved and proud sisters: Julia Cunningham and

Bertha George both of Mobile, AL and Ethel Dukes of Plymonth Meeting,

PA; four sisters-in-law: Mattie Bonner of Detroit, MI, Frances Jackson of

SouthField, MI, Betty Berry of Selma, AL and Mimmie B. Foster of

Pensacola, FL; three godchildren: Kenneth Minor (nephew), Alana Foster of

Mobile, AL and Brandon Harris of CA; and a host of nieces, nephews,

cousins and friends; special friends: Mr. Richard Davis, Herman Finklea and

Langdon Conaway.
