Alfred W. Naurock Obituary

Alfred Walter Naurock died on July 26, 2022, having lived his amazing life of 87 years with joy. Al was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 1, 1935. He attended the University of Illinois; and in 1957, received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he was drafted into the army and served two years at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. In 1961, while working at Motorola in Chicago, he met his wife, Florence. They were married 11 months later. Shortly thereafter, Al began working at the Office of Public Safety, a program within the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). For the next ten years, Al was posted to Central America. He and Flo lived in Guatemala and in Costa Rica, where both became fluent in Spanish. During his time at USAID, Al traveled extensively throughout Central and South America. In 1974, Al took a position as a communications engineer with the U.S. Customs Service in Washington, DC. Al and his family settled in Vienna, Virginia. For many years, Al was an active member of the Vienna Lions Club, serving two terms as president. He was never at a loss for words and enjoyed giving many speeches both publicly and privately. Al was a master of fixing all things, a handyman extraordinaire - leveraging his electrical engineering degree to its fullest. He possessed an unmatched attention to detail in all his endeavors, including the generous ways in which he loved his family. Al never wasted a single moment of life. In 1995, Al retired from the US government. Shortly thereafter, he accompanied Flo on her three-year work tour in Australia. While in Alice Springs, he worked for the Army Post Office (APO). It was a job that involved meeting and greeting (and sorting and filing). Al warmly welcomed everyone who entered that remote post office location. Nothing pleased him more than to be around his family and friends with lots of food and drink to share. Al lived his life well. Al is survived by Florence, his wife of 60 years, and their four children: Michael Naurock, Lynne Brents (Gene), Victor Naurock (Michele), Mary Nowinski (Matt) and their seven grandchildren: Lindsay, Emily, Hannah, Claire, Kelly, Jack, and Lilly; as well as his sisters Jackie Marais (Paul), Lorraine Naurocki, and Gloria Naurocki.
