Bruce Eric Falconer Obituary

Bruce Eric Falconer was born in Oakland, California to Barbara Ann Perry and Neil Eugene Falconer on March 1, 1955. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 18, 2022, after a two-year struggle with cancer. Bruce spent his early life in Lafayette, California, graduating from Acalanes High School in 1973. He went on to receive a BA in economics from UC Berkeley and a JD from UC Davis, where he served as executive editor of the UC Davis Law Review. Bruce had planned to clerk for a California-based judge after graduating from law school, but a paperwork snafu resulted in a last-minute pivot to a clerkship with an Alaska Supreme Court justice based in Anchorage. As fortune would have it, Bruce met Sharon Ruby, who would become his wife of nearly 40 years, shortly before he left for Alaska. Sharon knew the night they met that they would go to Alaska together (never mind the fact that she had just bought a condo in Davis). Sure enough, a month later they caravanned up the Alcan with a fellow clerk, Brian, who would become a life-long friend as well as Bruce’s law partner. Bruce insisted on doing all the driving, something he would repeat on future road trips, including a 9,000-mile, round-trip journey to New York City with his son, Scott. During his year-long clerkship, Bruce "caught the Alaska bug.” He spent some time working for a large San Francisco law firm after his clerkship ended, but in 1987 he eagerly accepted an offer to join the small, local firm at which he would spend the rest of his career (becoming partner in 1988). Bruce was a third-generation lawyer, following in the footsteps of his father, Neil, who himself was the son of two lawyers, Janet and Eric. Bruce worked as a commercial litigator for a broad range of clients, including Alaska Native Corporations and local governments, helping them resolve complex business, construction, and real estate disputes. Bruce was a "lawyer's lawyer," and his work was described by one superior court judge as "the best I have seen in my some 7 1/2 years on the trial bench." Bruce and Sharon welcomed a daughter, Evan, in 1985, with whom he would later spend a significant amount of time in his Lafayette childhood home as she cared for Bruce’s mom in her final years. Two years after Evan was born, Bruce and Sharon had triplets, Jean, Scott, and Neil. Raising four children with fewer than three years between them was a daunting task, but Bruce rose to the occasion, establishing distinct and meaningful relationships with each. Bruce was a man of many hobbies, ranging from the outdoors to cooking to playing guitar. His love for the outdoors began at an early age with the many camping and backpacking trips he took with his family and Boy Scouts troop in Yosemite National Park and the High Sierras. He was an avid skier and spent the year after he graduated from high school working and skiing in Yosemite. He had originally planned to stay for just a summer, but when his dad sent Bruce’s brother, David, to retrieve Bruce and deliver him to Berkeley that fall, Bruce wouldn’t go. Bruce imparted his love for hiking to his daughter, Jean, with whom he trekked throughout the Chugach Mountains (often in the company of their dogs) and backpacked in the High Sierras. It wasn’t until Bruce was in his mid-40s that he discovered golf, which quickly turned into what some might call an obsession. Bruce lived to golf, and during golf season he could be found walking 18 holes at the Anchorage Golf Course most days of the week. Bruce especially loved golfing with his son, Neil, and they played together nearly every summer weekend. Bruce’s obsession with golf continued undeterred even after he began intensive treatment for cancer in the fall of 2020. Bruce is survived by his brother, David (Shoshana); wife, Sharon; daughters, Evan and Jean (Will); and sons, Scott and Neil. He was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and Barbara Falconer. His family plans to hold a memorial for him in Anchorage this fall; details will be forthcoming.
