Nelson Louis Hemingway Obituary

Nelson Louis Hemingway Jr. 89 of Burlington VT passed away on July 14th, 2022 after a short battle with cancer.

Nelson was born on May 15th 1933 to Nelson and Edna Hemingway in St Albans VT. After attending Cathedral High School in Burlington he entered military service, joining the Army May 2, 1950 as a medical aidman. He served in the Korean War from November 1951 to March 1953 as a member of the 2nd Division Medical Company. He earned the United Nations ribbon, Korean Campaign ribbon with 4 battle stars, Combat Medical Badge, Unit Citation and National Defense Service medal-medical.

After his service he returned home to marry his childhood sweetheart Mary Payea on December 5,1953 where they enjoyed 68 years together. They went on to have 9 children Nelson, Mary, Nancy, Michael, Melanie, Nicholas, Robert, Bonnie and Amy.

Nelson started his career in interior finishes as a wallpaper installer for his father in-law Frank Payea, eventually starting his own drywall company, Hemingway Drywall where he retired in 2013.

Nelson was an avid sportsman and connected with many over the years as a fixture at Dattilio’s Guns and Tackle. Nelson loved to socialize was often the centerpiece of many gatherings, attracting those who loved his uplifting company and charm. His presence was intoxicating and his zest for a good time has many wishing him a fond farewell. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

Nelson was predeceased by his son Michael. Nelson is survived by his loving wife Mary and children Mary, Nelson and wife Mary-Ellen, Nancy and husband Edward, Melanie and husband Rick, Nicholas, Robert and wife Judy, Bonnie and husband Eric, and Amy and husband Jeff. He also leaves behind his 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at the Old Post August 21st @ 1PM located at 733 Queen City Park Road, South Burlington the former Franny O’s. There will be a private Service at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph VT August 23rd.
