Danny Holmes Obituary
Danny Lee Holmes, age 86, of Carroll, formerly of Boyer passed away peacefully at Regency Park in Carroll on Monday, July 25, 2022. He was born May 12, 1936 on a farm west of Manilla, the son of Burton (Charles) and Ann (Oldrug) Holmes. Danny was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron. He attended country school in Astor and was even taught by his older sister Ruby. He graduated from Manilla High School with the Class of 1955.
After graduation, he joined the United States Coast Guard where he worked on the USCGC Mackinaw. He then transferred to the Iowa Army National Guard where he served for a total of 27 years. In 1965, Danny was united in marriage to Marilyn Bogatzke in the country church south of Manning. To this union they were blessed with three children. Later, the couple divorced but continued to raise their children together.
Danny worked several jobs over the years until his retirement from Farmland Foods in 2000. He was an avid dealer of antique cars, enjoyed tinkering around the acreage, and traveling. He faithfully took his daughter Danette out to eat every Sunday. Danny was very proud of his grandchildren and loved hearing about their latest endeavors.
He is survived by his children: Daniel Holmes and his wife Denise of Mt. Carmel, Jeffrey Holmes and his wife Della of Odebolt, and Danette Holmes of Carroll; two grandchildren: Jacob Holmes of North Sioux City, South Dakota and Grace Holmes of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister Ruby and her husband Emery Christoffersen of Kimballton; brother Tom Holmes and his wife Sally of Union Grove, Wisconsin; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister in infancy Rose Ann; brothers: Buddy and Dale Holmes; and granddaughter Hope Victoria Holmes.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Astor Cemetery in Manilla with lunch to follow back at the church.
