<p>Bernard Lee Griswold, 4/25/1942 &ndash; 7/23/2022</p> <p>Bernard Lee Griswold of Woodstock, VA, passed away on Saturday July 23, 2022, after<br /> a brief but fierce battle with leukemia.&nbsp;</p> <p>A celebration of Bud&rsquo;s life will be held at a future date.</p> <p>He is survived by his wife Mary Gessner of Woodstock and daughter Susan Marie Griswold and son-in-law Kevin Dermond of Scappoose, OR.</p> <p>Bernard, or as family and friends fondly knew him, Bud, Buddy, Budley, Griz, was born<br /> in Hastings, MI on April 25, 1942, to Helen (Hogan), and Kenneth Griswold. The family<br /> eventually settled in Durand, MI for the greater part of Bud&rsquo;s upbringing. He was in the<br /> starting line-up on Durand High School&rsquo;s football, baseball and basketball teams. Upon<br /> graduating in 1960 he received a baseball scholarship to Iowa State University where he<br /> graduated with a B.S. in Fish Biology in 1964. That same year his daughter Susan was<br /> born and shortly thereafter, moved to Orono, Maine where he completed his Masters<br /> degree at the University of Maine in 1967. The family then relocated to St Paul,<br /> Minnesota for Bud&rsquo;s doctoral study and completion of his Ph.D at the University of<br /> Minnesota in 1970. Bud went on to have a rich professional life as a fisheries scientist,<br /> researcher and teacher, working for the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish<br /> and Wildlife Service and the National Sea Grant College Program at NOAA,<br /> Washington DC. Bud retired in 1995 but remained busy. After relocating to the<br /> Shenandoah Valley, VA he became active in local natural resource issues and served on<br /> the board of the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and the Shenandoah<br /> County Water Resources Advisory Committee and Conservation Easement Authority. In<br /> his retirement, Bud enjoyed traveling the world, scuba diving, fishing at his Canadian<br /> cottage and hunting for morel mushrooms. Bud was one-of-a-kind. He was a steadfast,<br /> loving and supportive father and husband; and his sharp intellect, guileless humor,<br /> profound work ethic made him a joy and inspiration to many. Bernard Lee Griswold, 4/25/1942 – 7/23/2022

Bernard Lee Griswold of Woodstock, VA, passed away on Saturday July 23, 2022, after
a brief but fierce battle with leukemia.

He is survived by his wife Mary Gessner of Woodstock and daughter Susan Marie Griswold and son-in-law Kevin Dermond of Scappoose, OR.

Bernard, or as family and friends fondly knew him, Bud, Buddy, Budley, Griz, was born
