Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of David Walter Jaques announce his peaceful passing surrounded by family after a courageous fight with early onset dementia.

He is predeceased by his parents Walter and Marjorie (nee Morfoot) and brother-in-law Joseph. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Susan (nee Bohay), sons Andrew (Alyssa), Steven (Frances), daughters Heather (Tyler) and Melissa (Dean), grandchildren Aubrey, Sedric, Jackson and Conrad, brothers Robert (Bonnie), Lorne (Svetlana), sister Pat and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Born on November 16, 1956 in Winnipeg, MB, Dave grew up on Grassie Blvd. Dave could be found playing baseball with the neighborhood boys or when his dad was home would be tinkering with all things mechanical. Growing up he had rescued an injured crow, and nursed it back to health by feeding it bologna. Mischief always had a way of finding Dave whether it was rolling his Volkswagon over in the back field or building a cannon that ended up exploding in Kildonan East Collegiate.

Once he completed high school, Dave attended Red River College receiving Red Seal endorsements as a Machinist and Tool and Die Maker. After meeting Susan through mutual friends in September 1980, the two were married in November 1981. Canvassing the greater Cooks Creek area for vacant land, Dave and Susan came across the Zora Road property that would become their home. With help from the hands of family and friends, the house was built in 1981.

Dave started his career at DAW Steel in 1973 and continued to work in the same building when DAW became Westland Steel in 1982. Throughout his time at Westland he left a lasting impact on coworkers, clients and suppliers, who inevitably became friends, while being a mentor to many apprentices along the way. When Westland’s doors were closed in 2011, Dave again was a package deal with the building as he remained on staff with the new owners of Speciallaser Tech until 2015. Dave’s time spent at 165 Cordite Road was very dear to him and it was another home for him.

An aviation aficionado, Dave traded in his prized Piper aircraft to marry Susan.

In 1985 the first set of twins arrived, with another set of twins arriving in 1987, the home was filled with love, laughter and periodic removal of his daughter’s bedroom door, and a couple of drywall fixes throughout the house courtesy of the boys.

Always having dirt under his fingernails from a hard day’s work while never wearing shorts, Dave always made time to watch practices, games and never missed a chance to go on a road trip for his children’s many sporting events to cheer them on and mingle with all the parents. These sporting events brought him to many destinations: Russia, Kentucky, North Dakota, Dauphin and Oakbank. In his spare time he would tinker in his shop, care for his mother and father and help friends, neighbours and farmers back on the road or in the field by fixing what they had broken. His love for everything green and yellow saw him spend countless hours keeping his John Deere’s in tip top (OK they ran and usually were in working order) condition.

A special thanks to the Staff of the Rose Unit in East Gate Lodge for all your love and compassionate care that Dave received, also the priority seating in the “Big Comfy Chair”.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you gas up your classic car and throw Dave a car show. Please wear your favorite shade of plaid to send Dave away in style.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday July 21, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Cooks Creek Community Centre located at 30026 Zora Rd., Cooks Creek, MB.
