Beverly Petersen Jennison Obituary
Lawyer and retired professor Beverly Petersen Jennison’s love of learning carried her throughout her life. On July 14, 2022, Beverly’s nearly twenty year courageous battle with cancer ended. She was surrounded by loved ones near and far, who traded stories of her brilliance and fierce love of her family.
Beverly was born on March 1, 1952 in Neptune, New Jersey to Paul and Jeannette Petersen. Jeannette instilled in Beverly her love of teaching and Paul her love in the movies. Paul owned the Claridge Movie Theater in Montclair, New Jersey, the location of Beverly’s first job in high school. After graduating Marylawn of the Oranges in New Jersey, where she was third in her class, Beverly continued her education at The Catholic University of America (CUA).
Beverly would spend more than forty years of her life learning and teaching at CUA. She first earned her Bachelor’s degree in American Politics in 1974 and later earned her Master’s degree in American Politics in 1978. She enrolled in The Columbus School of Law in 1981, graduating in 1984. Following graduation she had a nine year career as a healthcare litigator in a time when women weren’t welcome at the table.
On March 21, 1981, Beverly married H. Steven Jennison. The two of them celebrated 41 years of marriage this past March. Their time together was filled with international adventures, too many rescue dogs for Steve to handle, and many, many movie dates. They welcomed two children—Meaghan and Christopher, the pride and true joy of Beverly’s life. Ever the fierce advocate for her children, Beverly was most happy celebrating high tea in London with Meg or getting the best breakfast at Sunrise Cafe in Hilton Head Island with Chris.
In addition to shaping her own children’s education, she shaped law students legal writing for over twenty five years—first at CUA Law School and later the University of Maryland’s Carey School of Law. She shared her passion for learning and the law with hundreds of law students and was well known for her tenacious and unrelenting advocacy. She was truly a force of nature.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Jeannette and her brother Paul. She is survived by her husband Steve, her children, Meaghan and Christopher as well as Christopher’s wife, Josephine and her grandchildren, Ruth and Jack.
Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022 at 10am, followed by a funeral service at 10:30am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3513 N St NW Washington, DC 20007.
Donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad or to the Montgomery County Humane Society
