Donald William "Bill" McAlister, II, passed away on Wednesday morning, July 13, 2022 , in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 80. He was born the son of Donald William and Ethel Clare (Gilkerson) McAlister on June 28, 1942, in Wellington, Kansas. Bill graduated from Wellington High School, where he was a state champion golfer and then went on to attend and graduate from Kansas State University. He enjoyed a long career in the insurance and estate planning industry in Lawrence and Kansas City. Outside of the office, Bill was an accomplished golfer, fisherman, excelled in bird hunting and dog training, and became known to many young people as the "penny fairy" who, unannounced, left showers of pennies in his driveway as gifts. Following his retirement, Bill relocated to Wichita where he was able to spend more time with his family. As his health declined, he was very grateful for the move and the loving care he received from his nieces, Julie and Heather. Bill never knew a stranger, even becoming friends with people behind a counter or in a grocery store line. He was a consummate storyteller (some true and some stretched), entertaining small and large groups. In his youth he spent many summers on Blue Water Lake in Minnesota where he learned to swim, fish, compete in sports, and ride horses. He fell in love with nature and its beauty. The outdoors was his home. Bill was one of a kind who held his friends and family close. Thank you, dear one. Godspeed. Survivors include his sister, Judith Kelly and husband Bruce of Colleyville, Texas; sister, Becca Hines and husband John of Denton, Texas; brother, Tom McAlister and wife Gala of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Patricia McAlister of Dallas, Texas; nieces and nephews, Julie Leis and husband Doug of Wellington, Kansas, Heather Shank and husband Scott of Eastborough, Kansas, Kristan Collins and husband Scott of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Kate Gray and husband Randy of Columbia, Missouri, W.M. Cranmer of Irving, Texas, John Hines of Ponder, Texas, Nathan Hines and wife Teri of New Boston, New Hampshire, Robert Bourestom and wife Kristan of Carrollton, Texas, Melissa Bourestom of Dallas, Texas, along with numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Caroline (McAlister) Bourestom. Friends are invited to attend the graveside service and share favorite stories following the service. Graveside services will begin at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 18th, 2022 at Sumner Memorial Gardens in Wellington, Kansas. Pastor Zane Brooks will officiate.
