Dr. Orville "Bud" Thomas Boyle, Jr. Obituary

Orville Thomas Boyle, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday July 9, 2022, at his home at Miramont Pointe.

Orville was born September 27, 1929, in Portland, the only child of Orville Sr. and Edna Boyle.  “Bud,” as he was called from an early age, grew up in NE Portland, where he attended Alameda Grade School and Grant High School (Class of 1947).  As a child and teenager, Bud enjoyed building things and working with his hands, skills he learned from his handyman grandfather. He loved the outdoors, trout fishing with his Dad on the Nehalem River and Dairy Creek, as well as duck and pheasant hunting and camping (activities he enjoyed throughout his life with his own sons and grandson). He spent summers working in the Mt. Hood National forest as a firefighter and lookout station guard.

Orville attended the University of Oregon where he met Emily Jane Nichols on a blind date. After graduating he moved back to Portland to attend OHSU School of Dentistry, and he and Emily were married in the Spring of 1954. In 1955 after finishing dental school, Orville joined the Navy and was stationed in Camp Pendleton with the 1st Marine Division where he provided dental work for servicemen returning from the Korean War. They spent two years on base where they formed many life-long friendships. Orville retired from the Navy Reserves in 1987 having earned the rank of Captain.

Their first two children were born in California; Thomas (1955) and Julie (1956). In 1957, the family moved back to the Portland area and established his dental practice in Milwaukie.  There they bought their first home on Beech Street where they lived for nearly 60 years. Son, Matthew was born in 1959 and youngest daughter, Kelly was born in 1969.

Orville’s passion for dentistry and continuing education was evident by his involvement and contributions to numerous professional associations and organizations, including the Oregon Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Oregon Society of Dentistry for Children, Oregon Dental Service, OHSU School of Dentistry and countless others. He was awarded several awards and fellowships, including Oregon Dentist of the Year, and amassed nearly 2500 hours of continuing education in dentistry. After a failed hand surgery forced him to end his practice in 1996, he accepted a 3-month interim teaching position at OHSU’s School of Dentistry that ended up lasting 18 years. He officially retired from dentistry in 2014 at the age of 84.

Orville was a friend to many and valued his friendships deeply, often going to great lengths to stay in touch with old friends, organizing reunions and gatherings for a wide variety of friend groups. In his spare time, he loved to travel, golf, entertain, read books and “putter” around in his yard. He was a bit of a historian, spending time researching his family heritage and studying the history of World Wars. He and Emily were big time Duck fans and football season ticket holders for nearly 40 years, and he never missed an opportunity to watch his grandkids’ sporting events, even in the last few months of his life. He had a soft spot for Labrador Retrievers and had one by his side for nearly all of his adult life.

Of all Orville’s achievements, he was most proud of his family. In his later years his happiest times were at family gatherings where he would simply sit back, observe, listen and soak in the moments. He cherished every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always made each one feel valued and special in his eyes.

He is survived by sons, Thomas Boyle (Carol) and Matthew Boyle (Kathy); daughter, Kelly Middendorff (Michael); grandchildren, Danielle Law (Donny), Tyler Boyle, Megan Boyle, Zachary Ziegler (Myesa), Gabriel Ziegler (Caitlin), Hannah Ziegler, Maxwell Middendorff, Mallory Middendorff and Mia Middendorff; great-grandchildren, Mason, Logan, Reece, Quinn, Ronin, Magnolia, Hendrix and Baby Ziegler (eta late 2022). Orville is preceded in death by wife, Emily (2021) and daughter, Julie (2016).

A funeral Mass will be 1:00 pm, Friday, July 22nd at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Milwaukie, with a Reception following at the Milwaukie Elks Lodge.
