Betty Jean Burtch Obituary

Betty Jean Burtch, wife of the late John Harvey ("Jack”) Burtch, passed peacefully in Calgary, AB on June 28, 2022, at the Southwood Hospice, while holding her daughter"s hand. Betty is survived by her son Peter (Maureen) of Sault Ste., Marie ON; daughter Kathleen Tomie (Bob Perkins) of Calgary, AB; and sister-in-law Lois Burtch of Peterborough, ON. Proud grandmother of Bryan Tomie (Sylwia Raus) and Elyse Tomie; and very proud great-grandmother of Elizabeth and Sara Tomie, all of Calgary.

Mom was born on March 6, 1926, in Port Hope Ontario, to the late Kathleen and George Lowthian; and was pre-deceased by her brothers Earl (Lillian), Bill, and Ross; and also her infant son Allan George Burtch.

Mom was a very kind, humble, and loving person. In her 96 years, she lived a simple but extraordinary life and was a friend to many with her helpful attitude and unending support. She worked as a Homemaker for the Canadian Red Cross and in 2012 was awarded recognition by the Town of Port Hope for her outstanding community service. Mom loved animals and was a long-time supporter of the Northumberland Humane Society. She was also an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan and a busy member of St. Paul"s Presbyterian Church"s Women’s Association (WA) and Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) Annie Purves group.

Mom moved to Calgary in 2014 and lived independently until this past March. She enjoyed her time in Calgary surrounded by her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, “the dogs” (Abby, Finn, and Reason), many dear friends, and the community at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Mom, in her words, has "gone up the hill”. She will always be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all that knew her. Special thanks for their loving care of our mom to Dr. Sarah Evans and the staff of Unit 72 at Rockyview Hospital as well as Dr. Dina Radinskaia and the staff at Southwood Hospice.

Celebration of Life Service to be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at 2:00 pm at St.Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive SW, Calgary). A second service will be held in Port Hope at a later date. Final internment to be arranged at the Welcome Cemetery, Port Hope, Ontario.

Arrangements are entrusted to Evan J. Strong Funeral Services of Calgary and Allison Funeral Home of Port Hope.

If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to the Northumberland Humane Society (371 Ward Street, Port Hope Ontario L1A 4A4) or the Calgary Humane Society (4455 110th Avenue SE, Calgary Alberta).
