Douglas "Doug" Russell Pennell

Douglas Russell “Doug” Pennell

December 09, 1944 – MacGregor, Manitoba

July 11, 2022 – Stonewall, Manitoba

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Russell “Doug” Pennell

at the age of 77 while residing in Stonewall MB.

Doug was the youngest of the three children born to Margaret and Clarence Pennell while living in the MacGregor District. Doug attended the Southend School and later the MacGregor Collegiate. Doug had many friends from his younger years, many of whom remained his friends until the end.

Doug’s best accomplishment was when he married Betty Bieganski on October 9, 1965.

They resided in MacGregor where they welcomed their 2 children, Nyle and Dawn. Doug and Betty lived a few years in Neepawa but mostly in the MacGregor area until moving to Stonewall MB in 2018 where they were near their daughter Dawn and her children.

Doug’s working career varied, from moving buildings to transmission mechanic, to farming. He was always “a busy man”. One of Doug’s favourite past time was stock car racing. Many Sundays were spent cheering him on at the Gladstone Racetrack. A few years ago “Dusty Kernel” was given one last hurrah where he drove a stock car in front of his many fans.

Betty and Doug enjoyed family vacations while the children were young; many trips to Calgary; camping and visiting throughout Manitoba. They loved the many winters they spent in Texas where they gained many lifelong friends. They thoroughly enjoyed their trips to Las Vegas, Hawaii and Mexican Riviera Cruise.

Doug will be sorely missed by his loving son Nyle (Jeannine Boulet), his adored daughter Dawn (Bourque), and his treasured grandchildren Reece (Pennell), Mitchell and Renee (Bourque). His in-laws who thought of him more like their “brother”, many nieces, nephews and cousins on both sides of his family. There will be a void on his street in Stonewall where he spent quality time with his special friends & neighbours.

Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty (2021), his son-in-law Gilles Bourque (2019). His parents, Clarence and Margaret Pennell, and his siblings, Jean and Colin.

Throughout his life of many health issues Doug was always ready to attend any function or outing that was offered to him. Doug’s last journey was to go Home to be with his Betsy.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 3pm

Heartland Multiplex, MacGregor MB

Special thank you to the staff at Stonewall Hospital for the recent care of Doug.

Donations in Doug’s name may be sent to:

Sprucedale Industries, Box 225, Austin MB R0H 0C0

Doug and Betty were special to me. When they remodeled their home south of Macgregor I did a bunch of work for them. They were kind and generous. Doug always took the time for a warm conversation and a cold drink! My condolences to my classmate Dawn, and Nyle.
