Irma Gloria Dezen Obituary

Cumberland, MD – Irma Gloria Dezen, 93, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Friday, July 8, 2022, at her home. Born September 19, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, Mrs. Dezen was the daughter of the late Dr. Harry Julius Kalet and Sally Helen (Rosen) Kalet. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dezen, sister Doris Herron and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Irma graduated the University of Pittsburgh with BA degrees in English and Foreign Language. She was Valedictorian of her class and earned a summa cum laude distinction. Her desire to become a public educator came into fruition, and she enjoyed a celebrated career as a French and Spanish teacher at Braddock Middle School from 1965 - 1990. Irma’s happiest years were those she spent teaching. The mutual rapport she had with her students was apparent to all. Irma was an active member of the community. She co-owned and helped to manage her family’s business, Ray’s Jewelers for over 40 years. She was active with the Allegany County Retired Teacher’s Association, the western Allegany Kiwanis Club, Allegany County Music and Arts Club and the Maryland Crime Victims Resource Center. Irma was also a member of the B’er Chaymin Temple and the Jewish Women’s Organization, Hadassah. Irma had an impeccable sense of style and flair for fashion. She loved beautiful clothes, jewelry, hats and shoes and was always dressed to the nines. She was the essence of grace and elegance. Irma’s favorite pastime was playing “competitive” games of Mah-jongg with her closest friends. She also enjoyed shopping, reading, going to the movies and writing beautiful personal notes to friends and colleagues. She was a wonderful mother, a loyal friend, an exceptional teacher, a savvy businesswoman and an extraordinary human being. Irma is survived by her sons: Rick Dezen and Eddie Dezen; and her daughter, Barbie Corwell and husband, Russ. The family would like to extend special thanks to UPMC Western Maryland Home Hospice for the professional care and compassion given. They also extend deepest gratitude to Sue Cook, their mother’s personal friend and caregiver, for the love and care she provided. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Maryland Crime Victims’ Resource Center 1001 Prince George’s Blvd, Ste 750, Upper Marlboro, MD, 20774 or to the Hadassah 40 Wall Street 8th Floor, New York, NY, 10005 or online at Hadassah.org. Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, is handling arrangements. Interment will be in East View Cemetery.
