Brenda Ann Spear Obituary

Baring Plantation – Brenda Ann Spear, 60, passed away with family by her side on Friday, July 8, 2022 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Brenda was born in Calais on January 29, 1962, daughter of Carlton and Eva (Davis) Bohanon.

After graduating from Calais High School, Class of 1979, Brenda worked as a C.N.A. for the Calais Hospital and also worked at Ames Department Store. She started her own business, Bouncing Bear Daycare, which she owned and operated for 25 years. Brenda then went to work as a special education teacher for the State of Maine, Child Development Services where she most recently was the PSP Service Coordinator. She graduated from the University of Maine at Augusta with a Bachelor of Science in Mental Health & Human Services, as well as a certificate in Mental Health Rehabilitation, and her Master of Science in Teaching with a concentration in Special Education from Wilmington National University. Brenda loved working with children and considered her students as “her own children.” She was truly gifted when it came to teaching children and was even taking calls from her student’s parents during her final days; that says everything about the loving and caring person that she was.

Brenda loved the outdoors, enjoying four-wheeling, birdwatching, and spending time at her camp on Nash’s Lake. Above everything else, Brenda was so proud of and loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents Carlton and Eva Bohanon, Brenda was predeceased by a son, Corey Wentworth; nephew Stacy Furlong; Aunt Adeline Lee and her long-time faithful companion Kaiser. Surviving are her two children John Fitzsimmons and wife Tasheena of Calais, and Nathan Spear and companion Chelsea Washburn of Baring Plantation; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Newell, Jayden Fitzsimmons and Caleb Spear; a great-grand child, Iyla Rene Flick; two sisters, Evelyn Belanger and husband Russell of Buxton, and Pam Mitchell of Brewer; and her nephews, Nicholas Mitchell, Darrin Furlong and wife Jodi, Jeffrey Furlong and Jeremy Furlong; many cousins and special cousin Tammy LaFrance.

A celebration of Brenda’s Life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church Street., Calais. Burial will follow in the Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Brenda’s name to Sarah’s House, 346 Main St., Holden, ME 04429, or online at www.sarahshouseofmaine.org
