Alfred Ball Whelan Obituary

Alfred Ball Whelan died peacefully among family on July 8th after a long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). Alfred (Fred) Ball Whelan was born in Philadelphia, PA, the second son of Stephen T. Whelan M.D. and Virginia Ball Whelan. He graduated from The Haverford School and went on to get his B.A in English from the University of Delaware and his M.B.A from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Fred began his professional career in marketing at H.J. Heinz Company in Pittsburgh before following his dream of living in California and joining The Clorox Company in their Marketing department in the San Francisco Bay area. Fred then shifted his career to advertising when he joined the legendary ad agency J. Walter Thompson where he had a long and successful career. Once again, Fred took a chance and changed his career to executive recruiting at Lewis, Browand and Associates before starting his own executive search firm, with a partner, Whelan Stone. Upon retiring, Fred moved to Arizona before moving back to the East Coast to pursue his love of Civil War history by visiting the various battlefields in the Washington, DC area. Fred’s love of Civil War history urged him to devour every book on the topic that he could get his hands on. Fred was always a loving and caring person, providing advice to others looking at career changes or facing unexpected changes in their lives. Fred’s background in recruiting prompted him to volunteer at Montgomery County Community College, counseling new citizens in advancing their careers in a new country. He was a Life Member of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution. Fred is predeceased by his wife Susan B. Bimba. He is survived by his siblings Stephen T. Whelan (Ann), C. Michael Whelan (Liza) and Cynthia W. Weinberg (David). There is no funeral or memorial service, but his request was that any donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which made many of his treatments possible.
