Pembroke – Albion Dwight Goodwin, 88, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at his home in Pembroke. Al was born in Lawrence, MA on June 1, 1934, son of Dwight and Jeannette (Whipple) Goodwin. <br><br>After graduating from Lowell High School, Al served in the Naval Reserves until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. While on leave in Lowell, MA, he married the love of his life, Monica Marion, on May 7, 1955. Following his service, he returned home to Massachusetts and worked for Artisan Industries in Waltham, MA. In 1965, Al and Monica relocated to Pembroke, Maine where he started his career with Georgia Pacific, retiring with 30 years of service. <br><br>Al loved to be active in his community. He was elected to the Maine Legislature as a House Representative, serving four terms. Al also served his community of Pembroke on the School Board, as a Town Selectman, Planning Board, started a taxpayer association, and was currently the Treasurer for the Pembroke Library. Throughout the years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, had racehorses and was a member of the local trotting association, and golfing and was a member of the St. Croix Country Club. Al’s love for astronomy led him to purchase a large-scale telescope and operate the Goodwin Observatory.<br><br>In addition to his parents, Al was predeceased by a daughter, Debbie Porter; a sister Lucy Duggan; and two brothers, Robert Goodwin and Ronald Hackett. Surviving are his beloved wife of 67 years, Monica Goodwin; four children, Steven Goodwin of Pembroke, Julie Brown and husband Michael of Pembroke, Daniel Goodwin and wife Lucretia of Reynolds Station, KY, and Paula Brady and husband Kevin of Pembroke; thirteen grandchildren, Chris Goodwin and wife Rachel of Pembroke, Alison Goodwin and companion Wade Carver of Pembroke, Jake Porter and wife Danielle of SC, Caleb Porter and wife Allie of Buxton, Joshua Brown and wife Janet of Charlotte, Michelle Tupper and husband Ian of Hampton, NB, Zeke Goodwin and wife Vanessa of WV, Joseph Goodwin and wife Amanda of WV, Esther Goodwin of KY, Rebekah Calloway and husband Edd of KY, Sarah Ward and husband Michael of IL, Robin Ouellette and husband Adam of Madawaska, and Rachel Thibeault and husband Casey of Sinclair; many great-grandchildren; sister Virginia Celinski of St. Augustine, FL, son-in-law Curtis Porter of Buxton; many nieces and nephews; and his friend and fellow astronomer Charlie Sawyer of Pembroke.<br><br>A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Brad Morin 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist, 39 Hersey Rd., Pembroke. Burial will follow in Brewer Cemetery, Robbinston. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
