Mario Liuzza Obituary

Mario Liuzza, 77, a longtime resident of North Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Burlington, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Paola (Celauro) Liuzza, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage.

He was born on July 7, 1944, in Salemi, Sicily, Italy, and was a son of the late Sigismondo and Antonia (Gucciardi) Liuzza.

Born in the aftermath of WWII, he was raised in a small town in the countryside of Sicily, Southern Italy, until his late teen years when he moved to Munich, Germany, with his oldest brother and sister-in-law, pursuing a better life for himself and a better opportunity to provide for his mother and younger sisters. After almost a decade in Germany, he moved to Venezuela following his older brother Paolo’s advice to move to an emerging economy in a tropical paradise. Venezuela was then his home for the next four decades; shortly after arriving, he fell in love, not only with the country but with a beautiful Sicilian girl, to whom he got married and started a family. Life was great until the year 2000 when he moved to the US to avoid the threats to his family’s way of life that represented the rising communist regime.

From a very early age, he was interested in construction. During his career, he was the owner and CEO of MAFERLY MIL Construction Company, where he built over 30 buildings between residential, public administration, and office buildings, including two of the biggest banks’ headquarters during the ’80s and ’90s. In 2000 after moving to the US, he switched fields and worked in a machine shop, where he learned the trade and helped train other colleagues despite the language barrier.

His primary passion was always family. He was the pivotal point for his brothers and sisters, nephews, and nieces. He was often sought after for advice, and he was the one keeping tabs with all of them, making sure they were ok and offering comfort and support when needed. He was a huge fan of family gatherings around a table full of good and hearty food and, if possible, good wine. But with family members spread between continents, sometimes he had to settle with a good and long phone call. It was a typical scene seeing him very early on a Sunday morning with his contacts book calling all the relatives and family members, starting with those in Europe and closing with those in the Americas, taking advantage of the different time zones.

In addition to his loving wife, Mario leaves his children; Antonia Liuzza (deceased), Sigismondo Liuzza from North Chelmsford, Angelo Liuzza and his wife Rosangela Velasquez from Barcelona, Spain, Mario Liuzza and his wife Aline Liuzza from Chelmsford, and granddaughters Sophia and Laura Liuzza (Mario’s Daughters). His two sisters are still with us, Giovanna Migliore of Malden, MA and Giuseppa Giattino Marsala of Sicily, and many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces.

Departed before him was his beloved father Sigismondo Liuzza, mother Antonia Gucciardi, daughter Antonia Liuzza, brother Paolo Liuzza, brother Vito Liuzza, and sister Rosa Angelo.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022, from 8:00 am – 10 am at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday following the visiting hours at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 115 Middlesex St., North Chelmsford. Interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
