George J Crowther Obituary

George J. Crowther (77) passed away peacefully at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport, RI on July 1, 2022, after a long illness. He was born to George and Evelyn (Gagnon) Crowther in Westport, MA where he grew up.

He graduated from Westport High School in 1964 and married his high school sweet heart Barbara (Peckham) that fall. They lived in their home town of Westport, MA for a few years before making the bold move as a young couple to Little Compton to open The Commons Restaurant, along with George’s brother Donald. In 1982, the brothers and their wives opened Crowthers Restaurant in Little Compton.

George loved life, which included his family, his restaurant and the many employees and customers of The Commons for over five decades. He loved all aspects of his business, especially connecting with the community that was such a part of his life. He enjoyed talking and having coffee with his customers at the counter of The Commons, realizing that so many came not only for a meal, but for personal and community connections. With his graciously welcoming table side manner, he could often be found cleaning tables and pouring coffee on Sunday mornings. He will be remembered for the genuineness and affection he showed the community through his business.

Above all, George was a gentle, kind, and loving husband, father and grandfather. His family was his greatest joy. He will be sadly missed, and his spirit will live on through his survivors including his beloved wife Barbara and their daughters Cheryl Tammaro with husband Ron, and Cara Oliveira with husband Greg, as well as five cherished grandchildren, Jessica and Jasmine Tammaro and Devin, Kayla and Mya Oliveira, all of Little Compton.

Visiting hours Thursday, July 7, 2022, from 4-7pm at Fern Acres Funeral Home, 72 Willow Avenue, Little Compton, RI. Church services will be held Friday, July 8, 2022 at 11am, United Congregational Church, 1 Commons, Little Compton. Interment will immediately follow at Union Cemetery, Commons.
