ORANGE- Susan M. (Newton) Piro, 59, of Tully, MA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the home of her mother after a courageous battle fighting health issues, with her loving family at her side.

Born in Athol on July 13, 1962, Susan was the daughter of Richard and Joan (DeSantis) Newton.  She grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School in 1980.  She later earned her degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Lowell in 1984.  

Susan was married to Stanley Piro for over 35 years until his death on January 27, 2022.  She was a highly respected and gifted Physical Therapist for over 38 years.  In addition, she earned much love and appreciation as a waitress at the former Johnson's Farm and later at the Corner Cafe in Orange.

Susan loved the outdoors and was an avid runner, hiker and skier.  The Grand Canyon held a special place in her heart and she cherished the memories of the five opportunities she had to experience its wonder.  Susan also loved to paddle and participated in the annual River Rat Race for over 15 years.

Susan is survived by her mother, Joan Newton of Athol; her siblings, Cheryl Levesque and her husband, Paul, of Northborough, Brian Newton of Athol, and Cathy Savoy and her husband, Michael, of Athol.  She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews, Tom Levesque, Aimee Farrell, Carrie Tamillo, Melissa Eno, Sara Newton, Timothy Savoy and Nicole Savoy; her in-laws, Leo Piro, Ricky Piro, Julie Piragus and Diane Zichella; as well as countless special friends.

Sue was predeceased by her father and husband.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol, with Fr. Mateus Sousa officiating.

Interment will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
