Mary Ann Baker

Mary Ann Baker, 90, of Richmond, passed away July 2, 2022. She was the daughter of Ann Collier Powers and Daniel Coleman Powers, Sr., she was born on January 5, 1932, the first of nine children. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Daniel C. Powers, Jr., Jean Marie Powers, William F. Powers, Kathleen Powers Bucker (and husband, Bernard), David W. Powers, Sr. (and wife Frances), John L. Powers and Betty Powers Allen. Mary Ann was also preceded in death by her first husband, James B. Cowan Sr., who died on July 6, 1970 and her second husband, J. Glenwood Baker, who died on September 7, 2010. She is survived by her 5 children, James B. Cowan, Jr. (Ellen); Catherine Cowan Angel (James); Ryan C. Cowan, Mark P. Cowan and Mary Jo Cowan Tomlin (John). She is survived by her step-daughter Sherryll Anne Baker Pace (David), her former daughter in law, Princessa F. Cowan, her brother, James Powers (Helen), sister in laws Ann Powers, Janice Alexander, Peggy Conklin and brother in law, James "Butch" Allen. Her grandchildren Matt, Sarah (Pete), Mason, Carter, Riley, Spenser, Kelsey, Haley, Taryn, Morgan (Josh), Erin, William, Chandler, Austin and Elizabeth. Her great grandchildren, Findlay, Sadie, Wyatt and Charlee Ann. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, but in particular, her niece Christy Allen, with whom she had a very close relationship. Mary Ann, with her beloved, Glen, enjoyed the last years of their lives together cruising on their yacht "The Two Honeys" and enjoying many adventures to Florida and other ports of interest. She also enjoyed her memberships in the VMFA, Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, and Windsor Farms Women's Garden Club. However, more than anything else in life, she loved spending time with her family, whether at her home in Richmond or her home on Gwynns Island, where many games were played, fireworks were deployed every 4th of July by Glen and many other shenanigans took place. She was always fun to be around and much laughter occurred with her at all times. She loved to sing and her children grew up listening to her at home and in Church. She never met a stranger and easily made friends wherever she went. She was a devout Catholic who was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and during the last years of her life, St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mary Ann (aka Noni) when asked what she wanted to be most remembered for she answered "being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother." She loved her family greatly. Her family will remember her for being the nicest and most loving person they ever knew. Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 7 at Bliley’s- Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, VA 23230. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., Richmond, VA 23229. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or your favorite charity.
