Obituary

Lifelong farmer, Ronald Armstrong, fulfilled his final wish to pass at home on the family farm with his loved ones by his side. His family knew him as a vivid storyteller who was kindhearted yet firm, full of mischief, and loved a good laugh. Ron was a rare combination of someone who had a love of life and a firm understanding of what was important – the joy of living a simple life with those you love close at hand.

Ron was born in a small town in Northern England, on Dec 7, 1932, the second of four children. His sister Kathleen, and brothers George and Gordon, along with his mother Elizabeth resided in Bellingham. He told of many happy times, and a few of them mischievous. In his early teens he spent his summers on his Aunt Molly’s farm where his love of all things farming began to grow. At the age of 14, after leaving middle school, he began his career as a shepherd, quickly gaining a reputation of an exemplary stockman.

When adventure called his name in 1966, Ron took the opportunity to travel overseas to Ontario, Canada, where he worked on a breeding horse farm, and then a dairy farm for two years. Upon his return to England, a job opportunity arose at a local factory, allowing him to knuckle down and save what was needed to gain the tenancy of his own hill farm. In 1979, Ron married Shirley and became father to Stewart and Fiona. In 1981 Joanne was born, followed by David in 1985. Along with his family, Windyhaugh farm was his pride and joy until 1987, when they made the decision to move the family to Manitoba, Canada to continue his passion for farming. Ron’s final move would be to Gladstone in 1991, when he bought the farm now known as Armstrong Family Acres.

Ron loved all things farming, whether it was his sheep, cows or the crops in the fields, he loved living and talking about it.
