Alois John Fienup, Jr. Marshalltown, Iowa Obituary

"Al"

Alois Fienup Jr, known simply as “Al”, age 91, an icon of the Marshalltown High School, passed from this earthly life on the morning of Saturday, July 2nd, with family at his side. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 6th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Full military honors by the combined VFW and American Legion of the Marshalltown area will follow. He will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends and family alike are invited to a celebration of Al’s life at the American Legion on South 6th Street following the interment rites. A memorial fund is being established. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph. 641-844-1234. Born Alois John Fienup Jr. on December 18th, 1930, in St. Louis, MO., he was the son of Alois Sr. and Annabelle (Lebold). He graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis in 1949, and then the University of Iowa, earning his Bachelor’s degree. Al proudly served our country honorably in the United States Army, volunteering in June of 1953 and returning in May of 1955. He returned to the University of Iowa earning his Master’s degree. On August 30th, 1952, in St. Louis, he was united in marriage to Genevieve “Buzz” Mussmann. They were blessed with three children- Timothy, Mark and Cyndi. Following graduation from the U of I, Al had a choice of two places hiring P.E. teachers- Canada or Marshalltown, IA. We are happy he chose Marshalltown and passionately taught P.E. and coached swimming and gymnastics at MHS until retiring in 1992. He went by several titles: Mr. Fienup, Coach, but most simply called him “Al.” He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, golfing, and hunting and fishing, but most of all, time with his family. Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Timothy (Janet) Fienup, Mark (Virginia) Fienup and Cyndi (Mark) Hunt; seven grandchildren- Keely (Joel) Rees, Paul (Ashley) Fienup, Ann Fienup (Conor Broaders), Benjamin (Haley) Fienup, Claire Fienup, Ryan Hunt and Matthew Hunt; five precious great-grandchildren- Morgan, Luke, Simon and Leah Rees and Emory Fienup, his longtime friend Betty Fiscus, as well as many friends, former students and neighbors at The Willows. In death, Al rejoined his beloved Genevieve “Buzz”, his parents, and one brother, James F. Fienup.
