Wellington Friend Scott III (Scottie), 95, died on June 17, 2022.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas July 24, 1926, Scottie grew up in the New York City area (Astoria, Bayside, Beechhurst). After graduating from Bayside High School, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in 1942 and entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) for one semester. Scottie was called to active service in WWII, transferred to Harvard upon his honorable discharge and received his AB degree in Government in 1949. Scottie also received his JD degree in 1952 from Harvard Law School and MDiv degree in 1967 from Harvard Divinity School.

After law school, Scottie worked for the former Renegotiation Board in Boston followed by legal work at several law firms in the Boston area. Upon completion of divinity school, his work involved both administration and legal counsel at the former Waltham Hospital. On retiring, Scottie practiced law at Loughran & Corbett in Watertown, MA, followed by a few years of substitute teaching in the Newton School System.

At the completion of his first year in law school, Scottie traveled on the SS Volendam to Rotterdam to join the intercultural exchange program, Experiment in International Living for travel by bicycle from Belgium to France, and through the Loire Valley. It was on that trip that he met his future wife, Jane Ayer. Scottie and Jane traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia in their 56 years of marriage. In addition to travel, Scottie was an avid reader and he participated in book groups until recently. He was a passionate tennis player and could be found on the courts well into his 80s! He played many winters at the Badminton & Tennis Club of Boston and he had a membership at Longwood Cricket Cub in Chestnut Hill from 1957 until his death. He also belonged to the Harvard Club of Boston. Scottie was known to many as a concerned citizen and community member, and as a loyal friend.

Scottie was predeceased by his parents, Wellington Friend Scott Jr. and Catherine Tharp Altvater. His wife, Jane, died in 2008.

Scottie is survived by his daughters, Katherine Scott and her husband, Jonathan Leighton, Hillary Scott, and Tamson Scott; his grandchildren, Jonah Pierce, Levi Pierce, and Jiao Jiao Scott; his first cousins, Powell Scott, Winston Tharp, and Ellis Tharp; and his longtime companion, Carol Mayman McNally.

A memorial service will be held on July 9, 2022, 2PM, at Grace Episcopal Church, 76 Eldredge St. Newton, MA, followed by a reception. Masks are recommended inside, but not required.
