Pastor Herbert L. Johnson, Sr. was born on January 8, 1944 to Ollie and Flora
Johnson in Stuttgart, Arkansas. Pastor Johnson came from a very large family; he
was one of fifteen (15) children. Herbert was reared and educated in Stuttgart and
Little Rock, Arkansas. He moved to Chicago as a young man to pursue better job
opportunities. He later met and married, Margaret Rose Payne, in February 1971.
To their union, they were blessed with three sons, Herbert Jr., Christopher, Steven.
He was a true Man Of God, Family Man, and will truly be missed for his
teachings, preachings and jokes.
Pastor Johnson has been on the battlefield for the Lord for a very long time, he
served as the Assistant Pastor at New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church for
several years under the leadership of his mentor Reverend Odell Young. In 1986,
Pastor Johnson founded Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago, where he
served faithfully for 36 years until his health began to decline. Pastor Johnson
attended Chicago Religious Institute, as well as, the Chicago Baptist Institute.
Pastor Johnson was a member of several ministerial organizations, including
Chicago Pastor’s Conference and Community Ministers Alliance. Pastor
Johnson was exceedingly faithful to God's Word and cared about everyone. He
entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, following an extended
illness.
Pastor Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years,
Margaret “Marge” Johnson (May 25, 2020); grandchild, Travis Johnson; siblings,
Ann Smith, Robert Johnson, Florean Bledsoe and Henry Johnson.
Those he leaves to cherish the memories: sons, Pastor Herbert (Osteria)
Johnson, Jr., Christopher Johnson, and Steven (Ashley) Johnson; daughters, Heide
Johnson And Kimberly Underwood; Siblings, Ollie Johnson, Sudean Morris,
Verlean Bradford, Shirlean Willingham, Earslean Sims, Doris Hendricks, Gloria
Prutt, Joyce Randle, Roy Johnson, and LeeVaugh Johnson; eleven (11)
grandchildren, Tremel, Deloris, Michella, Neibo, Tammie, Ashaunti, Ashaurri,
Steven Jr, Sencere, Seneca, A’Layla; nine (9) great-grandchildren, Travis,
Jasonnee, Ayden, Chryssa, Kimani, Traniyah, Kalis, Tremyah and Tra’Von;
goddaughter, Azlia “Pumpkin” Bledsoe; and a host of other relatives and caring
friends.
