John (Jack) William Cochrane Obituary

Dad was born on July 31st, 1934 to Gertrude and Watson Cochrane in Russell, and passed away peacefully in Grunthal on June 22nd, 2022.

Dad was predeceased by his mom in 1950, dad in 1994, his brother Harry in 2000 and Virginia in 2015, as well as, many Aunt’s, Uncle’s and cousins. He will be missed dearly by his loving wife of 58 years, Roberta, son Roger and daughter Susan (Earl) Haut. He will also be missed by his niece Barbara (Gord) Tanner and their two boys Craig and Gavin (Rona), his nephew Keith (Connie) Cochrane and their two daughters Dana (Raj) and Nicole (Adam), his niece’s Marcia Weiser and Glenda Lucyszyn along with their families, as well as many other extended family and friends.

Dad LOVED farming, that was his passion and he enjoyed every aspect of it. He knew he wanted to farm at a young age and that is what he did. They farmed grain and had Polled Herefords from 1919-2007, then Red Angus from 1985-2007. They sold cattle to most Canadian provinces, 6 US states and exported to Japan and the Czech Republic.

He also loved his family and friends; what a group they were, there were many weekends and road trips spent/taken together. Mainly always with a cattle show/sale attached to the trip! He loved to travel, but being a cattle/grain farmer never left much time for that!

He loved to curl and spent a lot of time back in the day at Silverton Curling Rink, in the last few decades he loved watching bonspiels on TV. He also loved history, reading and writing in his diary.

In 2007, they sold the farm and retired to Russell. An amazing couple from Alberta, Brian and Ronda Olson, bought the farm and he was truly happy that someone was willing to take over the farm as a whole. They had three wonderful kids, Virginia, Celeste and Brendan, they spent many afternoons together after school at their house on Pelly, nothing made him happier than having his “chosen grandkids” come to visit!

In 2015, dad entered a personal care home in Birtle, then Russell and in the spring of 2018, Susan moved them closer to her in Grunthal, Manitoba. He always asked to go home to the farm, but it would have broke his heart to see what had happened to it, we always told him memories and pictures were better anyway.

We hope Dad is resting easy, he will be missed beyond measure, we love you Dad!
