Charles “Charlie” Monroe Varner May 13, 1940-June 19, 2022 Graveside memorial services for Mr. Varner will be held Thursday, June 30, 2022, at 11:00 AM, in South View Cemetery, with Rev. Andy Cunningham officiating. Charlie Varner, age 82, died peacefully in his sleep at ManorCare, Decatur, GA. He was born in Thomaston, GA, the son of Frank C. Varner, Sr., and Dawn B. Varner. He had two older siblings Julia and Frank, Jr. Their father was drafted in WWII and the family moved to Texas until the end of the war. They then moved briefly to their mother’s hometown, Joplin, MO, and later to their father’s hometown, Opelika, AL. In 1950 the family moved back to Thomaston. In 1958, Charlie graduated from R.E. Lee Institute, where he enjoyed his time playing the French horn in the band. Charlie graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Interior Design and he received the Senior Interior Design Award. He was a member of ASID and worked as a commercial contract designer for many years with Rich’s in Atlanta. He later free-lanced, doing work with a former colleague and previous clients. Charlie enjoyed the arts, particularly theater plays with musicals as his favorite. He also enjoyed giving carefully chosen, beautifully wrapped gifts to relatives and friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, GA. In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his older siblings, his nephew, Fletcher B. Huling and a great niece, Laura Leigh Tye. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Robert Varner (Arlene) of Dalton, GA, brother-in-law, Bobby Huling, Opelika AL, and sister-in-law, Jane Varner of Thomaston. He loved family gatherings and enjoyed his nieces and nephews: Libby Tye of Anderson, SC; Rob Huling (Leah), Opelika, AL; John Huling (Bridgette), Opelika, AL; Dee Dee Thompson (Cheze), Statesboro, GA; Cris Varner (Brooke), Simpsonville, SC; Stewart Varner, Philadelphia, PA; and Jay Varner (Jamie Gumbrecht), Atlanta. Great nephews and nieces Davis Tye (Michelle), Keith Tye (Meredith), Hunter Varner, Riley Varner, Landi Baldwin, Simpsonville, SC; Reid Thompson, Riley Thompson, Statesboro, GA; Savannah Willingham (Matthew), St. Mary’s, GA; and Gilly Varner and Mavis Varner of Atlanta, GA; and great-great nieces Marie Tye of Greenville, SC and Winsley Varner, Simpsonville. Charlie was generous and contributed to various causes, especially those that helped children and animals. The family requests no flowers and asks that gifts be made to a charity of your choice.
