Charles "Charlie" E Shepard Obituary

Charles “Charlie” Edward Shepard, 76, of Newton died on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Accura Health Care of Newton West. A celebration of life will be held from 4-6 p.m., Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Elks Lodge. Memorials to St. Jude Children’s Hospital may be left at the Elks during the celebration or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Charlie, the son of Charles “Chuck” and Josephine “Jo” (Thomas) Shepard, was born on July 12, 1945 in Whitley Bay, England. When Charlie was a little over the age of one, the family moved to Newton, Iowa. Growing up Charlie was active in Boy Scouts. He graduated from Newton High School in 1964 and then received his BA from the University of Northern Iowa in History. Charlie worked for many years and later retired as an Inspector at the Maytag Company. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Izaak Walton League. Charlie loved sports and avidly cheered for the San Francisco Giants and the Iowa Hawkeyes.  He was a walking encyclopedia when it came to sports statistics. Charlie enjoyed a trip to the San Francisco area with his friend, Hoyt, where they were able to watch 7 baseball games in 7 days. He also loved to golf.

Around Newton, many people knew and loved Charlie.  He had a kind heart and was always accepting of all people.  He was very generous to his family and never forgot a birthday or a special occasion.  Charlie would walk up to six miles a day and enjoyed the conversations he had with everyone on his route.

Charlie is survived by his mother, Josephine Shepard of Newton; sisters, Kathy Green and Karen Shepard, both of Newton; his nieces, Jennifer Gulling-Andrews of Newton and Kim (Rob) Meyer of Baxter; great-niece, Erin Suttek (Trent Williams); great-nephew, Ryan Meyer; and his great-great niece and nephews, Eleanor, Nolan, and Ledger. He was preceded in death by his father and brother-in-law, Ron Green.
