Richard Fisher Obituary

Richard (Dick or Scott) Fisher, 92 of Hamilton Ohio passed away on June 10, 2022 after a full life.

Dick was born in Columbus Indiana on March 8, 1930 to Dr. Walter and Mrs. Ernestine Fisher.  His education led him first with an interest in pre-med to follow in his father’s footsteps but ultimately in a bachelors degree in Electric Engineering from Purdue University.  He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and worked in the Pentagon for a period of time during his service.  Post military service he worked for AT&T as an engineer, supervisor and trainer for 28 years before retiring.

Dick had an insatiable interest into life sciences – paleontology, entomology as well as a passion for amateur radio.  His diverse interests, extensive knowledge, and desire to share made for someone with boundless capacity for interesting conversation. His pursuit of his non-work endeavors and hobbies was always deep, so much so that he gained the respect of researchers at the Field Museum in Chicago for his efforts to collect and categorize 309 million year old fossil specimens found in the Mazon Creek area found in central Illinois.  His love of fossils also brought him introduction to his future mother in law, Ruth Scott as she worked at the Museum of Natural History in Cincinnati.  The two fossil hunted many months before Dick realized Ruth had a daughter Mary (deceased) whom he would later marry.

His life was full of interesting travels such as an opportunity for an unfettered exploration inside the great pyramids in Egypt for several days due to a chance ham radio conversation while he was stationed in Saudi Arabia with the Air Force.  He traveled to Indonesia and New Guinea to collect exotic butterflies and visited Australia several times. Amateur Radio was his constant go-to hobby wise with a start by passing his ham radio license when he was 13 years old.  That hobby turned into real world importance when he was in the Air Force as an airborne radio operator and may have helped save his life when returning stateside.  His aircraft nearly crashed in the north Atlantic ocean due to icing.

Dick is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dana; three children, Christina, Scott and Raymond; 5 step-daughters; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren, who will all in various ways carry on his insatiable desire to understand and experience our world.
