The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:30 AM until the time of service on Friday at the church. Entombment will take place at the Forest Hill Mausoleum in Wisconsin Rapids with military rites provided by VFW Post #2534 of Wisconsin Rapids. Carl was born on December 27, l930 to Garrett and Annette (Huibregtse) Greeneway. He was one of three brothers. Carl graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1955, stationed in the US and Korea as a radar mechanic on the B-36 Bomber. He married the love of his life, Barbara (Lila) upon his return from the war in 1955. They were married 63 years until the time of her passing in 2018. He was a member of Faith Reformed Church for 72 years. Carl was a letter carrier for 31 years connecting with hundreds on businesses and citizens on his daily route. His love for the people and city of Wisconsin Rapids spurred him into service to his community. After being an alderman on the Common Council for 11 years, he was elected Mayor in l986 serving four terms. He credited his accomplishments during his tenure to his incredible staff, secretaries and city workers. Together, they successfully attracted Wal-Mart to anchor the Rapids Mall. Highway 34 was relocated to accommodate the expansion of Consolidated Paper’s No. 16 paper machine. Railroad switching yards were built, Highway 13 was expanded to a four-lane highway. Many hours were spent to get highway 54 enumerated and funded to make it four lanes from Rapids to Plover. Land was purchased for the present Eastside Business Park. The Wastewater Treatment Plant was upgraded and improvements were made to the City Zoo. He completed the separation of combined sewers in the City and set up the City Revolving Loan Fund. The Preway building was turned into an incubator, allowing independent businesses to rent space. He was a member of the Incourage Foundation and appointed its first president serving eight years on the board. Upon retirement, he and his wife Barbara enjoyed winter months in Gold Canyon, Arizona playing golf. He was on a baseball team until the age of 80. In 2012, he participated in the Honor Flight, a great and rewarding honor for him. He loved his family and was devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed all Wisconsin sports, especially the Green Bay Packers. Above all, he will be remembered for his loving care and devotion to his wife as she suffered through Alzheimer’s. He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his parents and brothers Bob (June) Greeneway, Phil Greeneway, brother-in-law Thomas Lila and sister-in-law Dolores Lila. He will be sadly missed by his children Mark (Sue) Greenway, Jackson, WI, Mike (Reina) Greeneway of Madison, WI, Mary (Gregg) Barta of Hartland, WI, and Todd (Susan) Greeneway of Appleton, WI and grandchildren Claire (Danny) Schmidt, Halley (Joe) DeHaan, Mikaela Greeneway, Evan (Elizabeth) Barta, Madeline (Ben) Makowski, Nicholas Barta, and Abbey and Allison Greeneway and three great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters-in-law Audrey Greeneway, Mary Lila and Marcine (Ron) Amundson and brothers-in-law Kenneth (Carol) Lila and Franklin (Jackie) Lila and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the staff, aides and nurses of the Rennaissance and Aspirus Hospice and to a very special caregiver, Rolanda Williams. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Faith Reformed Church. Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids is assisting the family with arrangements.
