Elmer D. Cherry Obituary

Elmer D. Cherry, 93, of Porterfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2022 at Aurora Medical Center-Bay Area. He was born July 15, 1928 in Marinette to George and Cora (Long) Cherry. Elmer was a lifelong area resident and attended the Miles School in his youth. He worked on the family farm in Porterfield before his marriage to Ann M. Guth on November 4, 1950. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and served his country during the Korean War until his discharge in 1953. Throughout their marriage Elmer and Ann resided in Porterfield and together raised a family of eight children. Elmer established his own business, Cherry Construction Co., working for many years as a contractor while continuing to help operate the Cherry farm homestead. Elmer was an aviation enthusiast and piloted his own plane for many years. He and Ann enjoyed spending time at one of their favorite places, the cabin at Beecher Lake where they would also snowmobile in the winter. Elmer is survived by his children, Kathy (Dale) Zorn, David (MaryJo) Cherry, Marcia Leeman, Tim Cherry, Jennifer Cherry, Kent (Mary) Cherry, Scott Cherry and Kay (Terry) Davis; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a niece, Julie Beyer; a nephew, Dana Cudnohusky; and a brother-in-law, Ellsworth Cudnohusky. In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; a son-in-law, Tom Leeman; childhood siblings, Vernon and Lois Cherry; and an adult sister, Donna Johnson. Visitation will be at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette on Monday, June 6th from 4 until 6 p.m. Services will follow with the Rev. Christina Forsythe officiating. Elmer’s family extends a special thank you to everyone at the Renaissance in Marinette for their care and support while he resided there. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for Emergency Rescue Squad, Inc. or Unity Hospice.
