Esther who was 87 passed into the arms of her Lord and savior Jesus Christ and
her husband William Newton Sr. on Monday May 16th at 1:50 am in the light of a full
red moon. She was at St. Charles Hospital in Bend after suffering a stroke and had Alzheimer's
for several years.
Born in Bend on Dec. 31st she was a welcome tax deduction to her parents James William Day Sr
and Opal Viola Swayze Day. Her father was a timber faller for Shevlin Hixon and Brooks Scanlon so
she grew up in the logging camps that moved around the Central Oregon area. When she left
school for the day she never knew if her house would be in the same place or moved by the train to
different spot. The family moved north of La Pine to a dairy farm on Day road where Esther had to
help milk and feed cattle every day before and after school. She attended La Pine schools then and
graduated in 1953. The principle moved graduation up a few weeks so she could graduate and then
marry her high school sweetheart and accompany him to El Paso, Texas where he was stationed
in the Army. They were married in Bend on May 10th, 1953 for 55 happy years.
Her husband, William Joe Newton Sr and her son William Joe Newton Jr both preceded her in death
as well as her 4 siblings James (Pat) Day, Harriett Harris, Evelyn Bell Hodges and Hazel Newton.
Esther has 4 surviving daughters Dorothy Ipock (David), Kathleen Badley (Brian) and Margaret
Burger (Randy) of Bend and Patricia Kitchen (Robert) of Gladstone.
She was a funny, caring and loving wife, mother of 5, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of
19 plus 2 expected this summer.
Esther was a homemaker and an excellent seamstress who made clothes for her family. She made dolls,
stuffed animals (Care Bears) and quilts. She embroidered by hand and loved to crochet. She would cut
plastic grocery bags into strips and crochet them into tote bags to be used for a variety of things.
Esther was involved in Deschutes County Home Extension, CBS Christian organization, TOPS where she
eventually became a KOPS and she taught Good News Clubs for many years. She was a member of
Foundry Church (First Baptist Bend) since 1971 where she was a Deaconess, worked in the nursery,
sang in the choir and helped out where needed.
There will be a celebration of life on Sunday July 31st from 1 to 3 at Foundry Church, 60 NW Oregon Ave.,
Bend, Oregon
