Our hearts are shattered. With profound sadness we announce the passing of Brian Albert Campbell on June 5, 2021 at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, enveloped in the love of his family. Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Brian was the second son of Colin and Beulah. His brothers and sisters were not only family, but great buddies and friends. There was seldom a time that Brian wasn't laughing at some joke or story as told by one of his siblings. Precious memories. Brian was a brother and a son, loved unconditionally by all.

Brian and Yvonne’s love story began 48 years ago. He was her world and she was his rock. Brian was a remarkable husband, a much-loved father, and he was truly devoted to his family. Many a night saw him curled up with his children watching movies and snacking on popcorn. Throughout this last year, Brian treasured outdoor visits watching his grandchildren at the playground, learning to bike, skate, and ski, or simply just playing in the backyard. Over the past few months, Brian and Yvonne would sit on the couch holding hands in the evening and he would look over to her and say “this is the best part of my day”.

Brian’s work as a millwright brought them to Fort McMurray in 1981 where they raised two children, Stephanie and Brandon. Like their Dad, they are caring loving adults and are respected in their professional and personal lives. Brian was so proud of their accomplishments. He stood with pride at their weddings and embraced being a Poppy to their children.

Brian and his family moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1999, where he found his passion as a National Representative with Unifor. He was a devoted trade unionist with an unfailing belief in the rights of others. In the words of his dear friend Walter, "Brian exemplified humanity, solidarity and trade union principles." He took a stand; he did not waiver or bend. He was a man of honour and integrity.

Brian loved his family first and foremost. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, golf, travelling, hockey (especially his Maple Leafs), family gatherings, cook ups, and a good belly laugh.

Our hearts are breaking as we grieve and mourn with each other. Brian will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his cherished wife Yvonne, his daughter Stephanie (Brett), son Brandon (Meghan), and the joys of his existence, his grandchildren Isla, Ellie, Nash and Mila. Brothers Phil (Sis), Glen (Shirley), Ian (Lori), Scott, (Tammy), sisters Flora (Keith), Pamela (Jim). Brian’s other family included Yvonne’s sisters, Ruby (Blaine), Diane, Beverly (Wayne), Paula (Peter), her brother Paul (Kyla), and her Mom Lucy Rose. Numerous nieces, nephews, his extended family, and the many friendships cultivated and treasured throughout the years. They were a prized possession that he regarded highly.

We love you Brian. We love you Dad. We love you Poppy.

In tears we saw you sinking

We watched you fade away.

You suffered much in silence,

You fought so hard to stay.

You faced your task with courage,

Your spirit did not bend,

But still you kept on fighting

Until the very end.

God saw you getting tired

When a cure was not to be,

So He put His arms around you,

And whispered, “Come with Me.”

So when we saw you sleeping

So peaceful, free from pain,

We could not wish you back

To suffer that again.
